Read previewThe Biden administration this week pushed out a slate of rules it says are meant to boost competitiveness and put more money into workers' pockets. There are already challenges to at least one of the rules — but together they could land overtime pay for millions more workers, ban noncompetes that prevent workers from moving into jobs in similar industries, and help people get automatic refunds for delayed or canceled flights. More workers eligible for overtime payUnder the Department of Labor's new rule, many workers who make under $43,888 will be eligible for overtime pay effective July 1. A ban on noncompetes that keep workers from taking new jobsPerhaps the most sweeping action for workers came from the Federal Trade Commission, which finalized a rule to ban noncompetes in most cases. Will a ban on noncompetes, new overtime thresholds, or airline refunds affect your life?

In a 24-page ruling, the judge, Aileen M. Cannon, told Mr. Trump’s lawyers to refer to the witnesses in their filing with a pseudonym or a categorical description — say, John Smith or F.B.I. The special counsel, Jack Smith, had expressed a deep concern over witness safety, an issue that has touched on several of Mr. Trump’s criminal cases. Judge Cannon’s decision, reversing her initial ruling on the matter, was noteworthy, if only for the way it hewed to standard practice. After making a series of unorthodox rulings and allowing the case to become bogged down by a logjam of unresolved legal issues, the judge has come under intense scrutiny. Each of her decisions has been studied closely by legal experts for any indication of how she plans to proceed with other matters.

"Many of us are prepared to roll out quite robust anniversary packages," the official told Reuters, but declined to provide details. The new sanctions would come as the U.S. and its allies look to maintain pressure on Russia with U.S. military aid to Ukraine increasingly in doubt. "All delegations expressed their support to the proposed package, except one who requested a bit more time to analyze the content of the proposals," said an EU official, pointing to Hungary. The official said, however, the new EU sanctions would blacklist almost 200 people and entities. "The Russia sanctions program is both an extraordinary success and an extraordinary failure, depending upon one's point of view," said Smith.

If you were among the many who wondered why anyone would make a "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" reboot, this time without Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, when the project was announced in 2021, you'd be forgiven. "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," co-created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane (who previously worked with Glover on "Atlanta") remixes the film's premise. Oscar Orellana, 30, paused in the shade of the InterContinental and waved back at one of the drivers who honked while passing by. For six years, Mr. Orellana has worked in the housekeeping department at the hotel, where he ensures that linens are stocked on each floor. His parents, too, long worked in hotel housekeeping; his father was picketing at a nearby Ritz-Carlton, he said. “I used to see my parents, and they loved their job, which made me want to go into the hotel world, and I love my job,” he said. They also felt caught in an awkward social position during a time when they just wanted to relax.

Representative Ann Johnson, a Democrat and former prosecutor, laid into Mr. Paxton from the floor on Saturday, saying he had broken laws that could lead to jail time. She also described what she said were senior members of Mr. Paxton’s staff whose integrity had compelled them to speak up about his behavior. She said one employee observed Mr. Paxton requesting expensive renovations to his home that would be taken care of by his friend and donor. When he continued to be paid by Mr. Paxton, she said, the man returned the money to Mr. Paxton’s campaign. After the impeachment vote, Mr. Trump personally vilified Mr. Phelan.
Republican Texas Gov. "Free Ken Paxton," Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, warning that if House Republicans proceeded with the impeachment, "I will fight you." "The ugly spectacle in the Texas House today confirmed the outrageous impeachment plot against me was never meant to be fair or just," Paxton said. The impeachment accuses Paxton of attempting to interfere in foreclosure lawsuits and issuing legal opinions to benefit Paul. "But for Paxton's own request for a taxpayer-funded settlement over his wrongful conduct, Paxton would not be facing impeachment," the panel said.
LUBBOCK, Texas, May 27 (Reuters) - The Texas House on Saturday voted to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton, a conservative firebrand and ally of former President Donald Trump who has been accused by his fellow Republicans of abuse of office. The Texas Senate is in recess until 1 p.m. CDT (1800 GMT) on Sunday, according to its website. "I look forward to a quick resolution in the Texas Senate, where I have full confidence the process will be fair and just," he said. "Attorney General Paxton continuously and blatantly violated laws, rules, policies and procedures," Representative David Spiller said ahead of the vote. The five-member Texas House General Investigating Committee voted unanimously on Thursday to recommend that Paxton be impeached and removed from office.
Revenue in the first quarter was down 6% and package volume was down by 5.4%. Both UPS and FedEx are downshifting and planning futures with smaller, more efficient networks. But beyond initial cuts, UPS and FedEx are leaning into technology upgrades to shrink strategically and emerge from the doldrums more efficient. The company has already begun the combination of Ground and Express, which will involve closing Express facilities and moving those operations into nearby Ground buildings. These networks have long acted as a moat around UPS and FedEx — making entering the delivery space so expensive it was rarely attempted.

The move to integrate FedEx Ground, its outsourced package delivery arm, with the FedEx Express overnight air delivery business was announced almost a year after activist investor D.E. FedEx Express is already handling FedEx Ground's pickup and deliveries in Alaska and Hawaii - fueling concerns that Ground contractors in the lower 48 states could be let go. John Smith will become president and CEO of U.S. and Canada ground operations at FedEx Express and assume leadership of surface operations across the FedEx Express, FedEx Ground and FedEx Freight businesses from April 16. FedEx Freight will continue to provide freight transportation services as a standalone company under the Federal Express Corp banner, the company added. Shares in FedEx, which also announced a 10% dividend boost on Wednesday, were up about 2% in mid-morning trade.
FedEx had come under criticism from investors last year for its subpar performance compared to UPS, which has a unionized workforce. In response, FedEx outlined extensive plans to cut costs, including parking planes and reducing headcount. The phased transition announced Wednesday will ultimately bring FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Services and other FedEx operating companies into Federal Express Corporation and will be headed by present Chief Executive Officer Raj Subramaniam, the company said. Former DOJ employees make up both its in-house team and members of outside counsel firms it employs. Google also uses four different outside counsel firms loaded with nearly 20 former DOJ officials, many of whom worked in the Antitrust Division at various times. The DOJ made the accusation in a legal filing after Epic Games raised the concern in its own antitrust litigation against Google. Those firms collectively have around 20 former DOJ employees on their staff, many of them working in antitrust. For example, DOJ antitrust chief Jonathan Kanter previously worked for clients including Microsoft and Yelp which have complained of Google's allegedly anticompetitive behavior.

Insider learned about the WADU system through interviews and leaked internal documents that explain what kinds of data it captures. Though the use of Palantir was reportedly for security purposes, JPMorgan employees who spoke to Bloomberg said the situation quickly escalated. When companies are opaque about how they use employee data, the consequences can be detrimental — from harming employee "engagement" to eroding their "mental health," Garr said. Companies that fail to do this run the risk of cultivating the kind of mistrust that JPMorgan employees claim is running rampant through their ranks. "It does not sit well with me, what they're doing," said the US-based staffer with direct knowledge of the WADU system.
